Description
Somewhere in Northern New Mexico or Southern Colorado this golden valley captured my attention as I was searching for just this type of fall foliage picture. I took my picture under the cloudy skies, and a few hours later, as I was returning down the same road to get back to my hotel, a local photography club of about 20 people were set up on the side of the road with their cameras on tripods, waiting for the sun to set to shoot the same scene. I had what I felt was my best shot already, so I just drove on.
A few years ago, I wanted to add some fall foliage pictures to my portfolio. Since my hometown in West Texas doesn't provide much in that area due to a lack of anything but mesquite trees, I drove to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and made it my home base for 3 or 4 days. The original plan was to drive around the countryside, find beautiful stands of turning aspens, and return to that spot the next day when the light was striking the trees from the desired direction.
As often happens, the weather didn't fully cooperate with my plans, and it remained cloudy for almost the whole time I was there. Cloudy conditions can help make colors jump out in a photograph though, so my cameras and I just drove all day, every day, looking for anything photogenic that jumped out at me. I covered a lot of ground in both New Mexico and Southern Colorado, and it was a very enjoyable project/trip, producing a lot of scenic & colorful landscapes.
