We begin seeing tarantulas on our property every year, right around July 4th, so I'm thinking they are patriotic souls. Whenever I post a picture of one, the response is always, "Nope, I'd be moving," but they aren't really that scary, in fact, they are fairly popular as pets. They can bite, and have a venom slightly less powerful than a bee, but are not aggressive. You can hold your hand in front of one, and he/she might walk onto your hand, and then you can transfer him/her to your shoulder, and freak all your friends out.
