Description
Lonely, deserted, vacant, grown up, forgotten. Words that could easily describe this scene. In previous years, the front porch was often the center of a neighborhood society and local culture. How long has it been since this porch felt the pitter patter of little bare feet, and heard the sounds of laughter and complaints about the weather?
The Blue Ridge Parkway, which is America's longest linear park, runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
My wife and I traveled to the Northern end of the Parkway during the fall, for the express purpose of photographing the gorgeous autumnal colors in the Parkway. The night we arrived to begin our journey, it just so happened that a huge line of thunderstorms blew through that part of the country, and almost every leaf that had already turned red was blown off it's tree.
That's the life of the photographer; you "pays" your money, and you "takes" your chances. It's happened before, and will probably happen again, but, there always remains something beautiful to see and capture with my camera, regardless of less than perfect conditions, and it's always worth the journey.
