Description
Though I used a number of photographic sources this is my composition. I have always been troubled by art shows wherein the Best of Show is simply a copy of an outstanding photograph out of a magazine like National Geographic, Quarter Horse Journal or some other magazine. In this case the creativity belongs to the photographer.
I confess to painting directly from professional and published photographs but do not submit them for competitions unless my treatment of the image is not realism or photorealism. The hardest part of making a painting is originality not only in technique or concept but also in image. This one I feel is mine as I had to combine three different images into one which is no simple task considering the direction of the light source and position of the various elements.
Truthfully, I have successfully painted all sorts of pictures, landscapes, portraits,still life but my heart is fixed on western art images. I grew up in Oklahoma and Kansas, listening to Hank Williams and Roy Acuff, riding on horses and in pickup trucks. I daily saw cowboys in chaps and spurs (yes, they are worn and not just in the movies) with their horses in tack, loaded and unloaded from manure covered trailers. I like the smell of saddle soap and the feel of a lariat in my palm.
